    Description

WWI / interwar Navy uniform named to a family member of Rear Admiral John Grimes Walker, from a recent estate cleanout. Admiral Walker died in 1907, so this would likely be from his grand or great-grandson... I haven’t dug deep enough on Ancestry to find a definitive answer.
The jumper uniform is close to unworn, but does have some noticeable moth damage, particularly to the right armpit area and around the waist. The uniform pieces are WWI manufactured, but the name stamp is more in line with 1920s or 1930s styles. The trouser buttons have mostly been resewn with WWII Navy or civilian buttons.
The interesting thing here from a research perspective is the privately printed biography / collection of Admiral Walker’s correspondence compiled by Frances P. Thomas in 1959, which covers his service in the Civil War through to the early 1900s, although most of the letters included seem to be from the 1890s when he was Chief of the Navy’s Bureau of Navigation. Please note the water damage to the cover, and that the spine binding is coming undone.
